My Good Deed on 9/11

Tomorrow marks the 14th anniversary of 9/11. Today's students are too young for this to be a significant date for them. Unless they are 10th grade or higher, they probably hadn't even been born yet.

I remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2011. I was teaching Theatre Arts at Calhoun High School (Go, Sandcrabs!!) and it was during morning classes. An English teacher opened my class door and told me to turn on the television. She mentioned something about a plane crash and then went off to tell the next teacher. Turning on the TV, my students and I became transfixed with what we were watching. A plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. We watched as the second plane crashed into the other tower. We watched as the first tower fell. We watched as the second tower fell. We watched for days, stunned at was happening in our country.

Thousands of innocent Americans died because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. But what was more horrible, so many First Responders and Good Samaritans died that day trying to help others.

In honor of those lost lives, and to honor his brother Glenn who was one of those Good Samaritans, Jay Winuk and his friend David Paine created MyGoodDeed.org. Their organization is working to encourage Americans to make 9/11 a day of volunteering and helping others. Through their efforts, September 11 became a federally observed Day of Service and Remembrance in 2009.

Visit their website MyGoodDeed.org to pledge your good deed for tomorrow. Show kindness to someone to memorialize those on 9/11 who gave their life to do the same.

14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy is a beautiful book about a village in Africa that felt the pain of America after 9/11 and helped in the only way they knew how. Librarian Analine Johnson created this award-winning book trailer for the book. Watch it and remember.

Your Marks on the Digital World

Back in the day when I was a student in high school, we passed notes. That was how we talked to each other during class. We handed them off between class or after school. Those old school letters would get thrown away or saved for memories. Worst case scenario a teacher might pick it up and read it to the class!

I recently read a statistic that there are more cell phones in the world than there are toilets. In my house there are two toilets and three cell phones so that rings true here. But putting technology in the hands of teenagers can be a very dangerous thing!

According to Uncle Ben Parker, "With great power comes great responsibility."

In today's tech age, texts, messages, and social media posts become part of your digital identity. So you had a bad day and you got mad at your friend. Back in the day, write an angry letter. The friend reads it and tears it up. Now that same student might post their frustration on Twitter or Instagram. That post has now become part of their digital identity to last forever. It can be shared, retweeted, regrammed to large numbers of people in a few clicks. It can be saved to the computer of each person that views it. Even if the poster deletes it, anyone with a saved copy can repost it at any time.

I have heard of the Digital Footprint for years, the marks you leave on the digital world. Inking your Digital Tattoo is probably a better analogy. Unlike footprints, tattoos are permanent. They can sometimes be lasered off, but they will always leave a scar. Tattoos can jeopardize jobs opportunities and relationships. And many times there is great regret.

As more and more employers, colleges, and other institutions use google searches to find out more about applicants, be ever so careful about what you post. That angry post today could cost you a job tomorrow. That inappropriate picture could cost you a relationship tomorrow. Those profane words could cost you a college scholarship tomorrow. THINK  before you post.
